Computer science and CAD students get the grand tour of Microsoft's Detroit tech center.

Twenty-eight Notre Dame Prep students who are taking AP computer science and our CAD classes this term trekked to downtown Detroit on Tuesday to visit the Microsoft Technology Center located adjacent to Campus Martius Park.

According to Eden Konja, Notre Dame’s director of information and academic technology, the students received a tour of the 40,000 sq. ft. facility and were able to get some real-world, hands-on learning.

"The agenda included introductions, coding an arcade game, Minecraft for Education, lunch, and tour, which included some really cool technologies and an awesome makerspace area," he said. "The kids really liked the culture and environment of Microsoft's office. It showed them what tech companies like Microsoft are doing to create a collaborative open work space for their employees."

The Michigan Microsoft Technology Center is one of 40 centers worldwide that provides resources for company clients to explore its products and see how Microsoft can help with their businesses. Its employees moved to the 1.1 million-square-foot One Campus Martius office tower from Southfield in early 2018.

"A number of our students said after our visit on Tuesday that they'd really like to work there or at a place like the tech center," Konja said. "They loved that kind of work environment."
