Another look into our Notre Dame ‘window’

A school day in the life of Notre Dame junior Michelle Khan includes chemistry, AP composition and a healthy lunch courtesy of the cafeteria chefs.

Michelle Khan is a junior in Notre Dame’s upper division. Her typical Notre Dame day this term begins with AP government, which is taught by Heidi Newby. Khan follows AP government with Michelle Pittel’s morality class, Spanish 7/8 with Lauren Raleigh and AP psychology, which is taught by John Smith, III. Khan says AP psychology is one of her favorite classes.     

“I really like how Mr. Smith teaches and how he makes connections in the class,” she said. “He’s really funny and knows how to get everyone on the same page when he’s teaching.”     

When Khan takes a welcome break from her studies for lunch, it’s down to the cafeteria for some of what Flik Independent School Dining is providing. Khan doesn’t have a study hall this term, so right after lunch, she’s back in class for Katrina Sagert’s AP composition, chemistry with Susan McGinnis, honors trigonometry/pre-calculus with Daniel Chun and finally, human anatomy & physiology class with Dr. James Doyle.       

It’s not all classwork and homework for Khan as she also has become involved with the school’s multicultural alliance and the Spanish National Honor Society, which meets sometimes during school but more often after.     

Khan says that while she remains steadfast in keeping up with classwork, still there is time for fun, usually  involving classmates Hannah Travelbee and Alissa Allen-Howard. When asked about any post-high school plans, including career goals, Khan says it’s still too early for her.

“I do not have in mind a specific major or career yet, but I know that I definitely want to go to a college out of state,” she said.
