Real design

Notre Dame students attend prestigious 3D computer and software conference for real-world learning.

At the Dassault Systѐmes 3DEXPERIENCE Modeling and Simulation Conference, which runs through Sept. 19 at the Suburban Collection Showplace in Novi, members of Katrina Palushaj's NDP computer science class got a chance Wednesday to mingle with the movers and shakers of the world's 3D design, modeling and simulation communities.

According to Palushaj, the students were able to ask questions and learn much about the future of an industry that promises to be at the forefront of product design for many years.

"The kids were able to speak with and listen to business leaders from around the world of design in one building," said Palushaj, who teaches Dassault's CATIA V6 software at Notre Dame. "It was an experience that not many high schools or high school students have the opportunity to do. They were introduced to the latest 3D-simulation platform that the future of technology is moving toward. It was very exciting for them."

The conference included an impressive list of keynote speakers and customer presentations, in addition to an executive roundtable, a networking lunch and reception, and breakout sessions on everything from autonomous mobility and cognitive augmented design to simulation and the use of generative design to transform product development.

"I want to give a big thank you to Sari Gerb, the Dassault liaison for Notre Dame, for helping to make this happen, along with Jean-Philippe Laguerre, senior client executive for academia and research for Dassault, Florent Salako and David Esposito, who are all part of the Academia wing of Dassault Systèmes supporting Notre Dame," Palushaj said.
