Notre Dame’s newest student club readies for Earth Day and beyond

Earth Day 2013 is Monday, but Notre Dame's newest student club is already on the job to help protect our natural resources.

The Notre Dame Marist Academy – Middle Division Environmental Club, or "E-Club," is moderated by middle division counselor Kim Smith. She says club members have been busy with a number of initiatives.

"The E-Club’s newest project is recycling in the lunch room," Smith said. "And daily reminder announcements are made in the cafeteria to remind all students to recycle. The Notre Dame Marist Academy community has been very helpful in recycling and the upper division also is using the setup in their lunch room to recycle as well."

Smith said the E-Club, which currently has 14 members, also sponsored a bake sale recently, which made $45. "Part of that money went to purchase clear plastic bags for recycling," Smith said. "A local Staples store also was kind enough to donate recycle bins for each classroom and [middle division teacher] Mrs. Pauwels donated red bags to hold recycled bottles and cans in each classroom. In addition, every Thursday, the E-Club picks up the recycling from each division classroom."

Future goals for the club include getting involved in a food garden, planting trees on campus, having a bake sale, a reusable water bottle sale and an awareness day for Earth Day.

If other students would like to join or have any ideas, please contact Mrs. Kim Smith in the middle division counseling office.
