Notre Dame's Pre-Med club scores visit next week by noted forensic pathologist Werner Spitz.
Werner Spitz, a forensic pathologist recognized for his work on a number of high-profile cases, including the civil trial of O.J. Simpson and the assassinations of President Kennedy and Martin Luther King, Jr., has agreed to give a lecture at Notre Dame on December 11. The event is being sponsored by the school's Pre-Med Club, which currently has as its co-presidents, seniors Nicholas Foltenyi and Madelyn McCullen.
"Dr. Spitz is asked to give lectures regularly, and at the age of 91, he still conducts regular autopsies nationwide," McCullen said. "In addition, he is in great demand by forensic pathology organizations across the world to give lectures and speeches. It is a great honor for NDP to host such a respected figure in the medical world and we are very fortunate to have him visit us with such a busy schedule."
According to McCullen, Spitz also assisted in the exhumation of the body of Fr. Solanus Casey upon the request of the Catholic Church for the purpose of extracting relics before his beatification.
NDP's Pre-Med Club meets regularly throughout each month, depending on the number of speakers the club signs up and when they are available.
"We are still working on getting the word out about the club and currently we have around 15 members," McCullen said. "At our meetings, we discuss different areas of the medical field and are hoping to teach members about different applications of first aid. In addition to this, we are working on offering service hours to students through volunteering associated with hospitals."
Not slowing down
Over his long career, Spitz has authored numerous books, including the Spitz and Fisher’s Medicolegal Investigation of Death, considered to be the “bible of forensic pathology.” Today, Spitz, also is a professor of pathology at Wayne State University School of Medicine and an adjunct professor at the University of Windsor in Canada.
The fifth addition of Medicolegal Investigation will be released in early 2018.
Depending on interest in the Dec. 11 Spitz lecture, McCullen said they will hold the event in either a classroom or the media center in Notre Dame's upper division. The lecture begins at 3 p.m.
