Upcoming fifth-grade exhibition for IB-PYP focuses on the human condition. Students present on cancer, homelessness, veterans, and injuries in sports among other topics.
On Friday, April 28, 2017, Notre Dame’s lower division will host its seventh annual “Exhibition,” the culmination of the years spent within the International Baccalaureate's Primary Years Program (PYP). This year, ten teams of Notre Dame fifth graders will present the results of their extended inquiry focused on the transdisciplinary theme, “Who We Are,” which means they have been inquiring about things that make us human and the challenges we face to live to our full potential.
To help drum up interest in the Notre Dame community for all their hard work, the student-teams put together YouTube video commercials that define each of their chosen subject areas. See below.
Paul Frank, Notre Dame’s International Baccalaureate PYP coordinator and math specialist in the school’s lower division, said the fifth graders have been extremely busy.
"If you were walking through the hall of Notre Dame’s lower division lately you may have seen fifth graders in many parts of the school interviewing people, taking pictures, filming skits, making bulletin boards, singing songs, doing research, and much more,” he said, “all of which is necessary for a successful exhibition for the kids.”
According to Frank, the Exhibition represents a significant event in the life of both the school and the student, as it synthesizes the essential elements of the PYP, and shares them with the whole school community and sometimes to the community at large.
“Each team formed its own central idea and lines of inquiry to use as guides to gather research to know as much as they could about their topic,” he added. “Then students collaborated to come up with an action plan to bring awareness of their topic to a larger audience. The more people know about their particular concerns, the better chance they have of making a real difference.”
The exhibition will be held at 6:30 p.m. on April 28 in the William Kozyra Assembly Hall located at Notre Dame’s lower-division campus.

More on the PYP Exhibition
In the final year of the PYP, students, carry out an extended, in-depth, collaborative project known as the PYP exhibition. This involves students working collaboratively to conduct an in-depth inquiry into real life issues or problems. Students collectively synthesize all of the essential elements of the PYP in ways that can be shared with the whole school community.
It also provides teachers with an authentic process for assessing student understanding. The exhibition represents a unique and significant opportunity for students to exhibit the attributes of the IB learner profile developed throughout their engagement with the PYP. It also provides schools and students with an opportunity to celebrate the transition of learners to the next phase of their education.
