Survey Shows IB Influence on College Acceptance

A worldwide survey conducted recently for International Baccalaureate showed acceptance rates for top universities in the United States. Students with an IB education averaged far better acceptance rates to 20 of the nation's most elite universities than non-IB students.

Marlyn McGrath Lewis, dean of admissions at Harvard University commented on the influence of IB on university acceptance. “Success in an IB program correlates well with success at Harvard. We are always pleased to see the credentials of the IB Diploma Program on the transcript. GPA is not nearly as important a factor in university admission as the IB Diploma. If a student has to choose, choose the Diploma over protecting the GPA.”

Notre Dame has been an International Baccalaureate school since 2007.

Among the study findings:

– The average acceptance rate of IB students into university/college is 22 percentage points higher than the average acceptance rate of the total population.

– The acceptance rate of IB students into Ivy League institutions (Princeton, Yale, Brown, Harvard, Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, University of Pennsylvania) is between 3 and 13 percentage points higher compared to the total population acceptance rate.

The study, released in 2012, was conducted by i-graduate, a UK-based research consultancy and released in 2012. IB worked with i-graduate on the global survey, which involved thousands of IB Diploma Programme students in IB World Schools from Australia, Canada, India, Mexico, Spain, the UK and the US.
