Student art show includes special IB art exhibition

Artists' reception scheduled for Monday, April 23, at 6:30 p.m. in the student gathering area.

The 2018 Notre Dame Student Art Show and IB Exhibition, which opened April 10 and runs through April 26, features art from students in the school’s upper division. The large and eclectic array of media and talent is on display in the main lobby of the school's Pontiac campus, with special emphasis on a number of International Baccalaureate program student-artists.

Sandy LewAllen is chair of Notre Dame’s art department and curated this year’s show. “This exhibition will showcase another great aspect of this school and the type of students we have,” she said.

A reception for the artists, families and friends will be held on Monday, April 23, at 6:30 p.m. in the student gathering area.

The exhibition comes after seven student-artists from Notre Dame — Destiney Sandle (12), Maria Mora (12), Kyle Conroy (12), Amelia Cumming (10), Thomas Fazio (12), Kathryn Lee (11) and Natalie Lyijynen (11) — found out in March that they earned national recognition in the 2018 Scholastic Art and Writing Awards competition.

Sandle and Mora received one gold award each and Conroy, Cumming, Fazio, Lee, Lyijynen and Sandle received silver awards from Scholastic, with Fazio and Sandle each getting two silver awards.

Gold award recipients have an opportunity to travel to New York in early summer to be honored at Carnegie Hall.

Earlier this year, NDP students earned a total of 50 regional awards in the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards competition for the Southeastern Michigan region, beating last year's 45 awards for the school, which was a big increase from the 2016 school record of 27 awards.

According to Sandy LewAllen, Notre Dame’s art chair, earning 50 awards tops the number of awards ever won at Notre Dame Prep and is one of the largest groups from any school in the region, including very large public schools such as Stoney Creek and Novi. “I couldn't be any more proud of all of our art students and their efforts,” she said back in January.

The school exhibition is open daily during school hours.
