Sophomore scores big in essay contest

An essay written by Rachel Michel, a sophomore in Notre Dame’s upper division, was named the second best of all essays submitted to the regional branch of the Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians, a national U.S. organization of women advocating for Catholics of Irish descent.

The topic chosen for the essay competition was “The Involvement of Women in the 1916 Easter Rising” to help commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Easter Rising in Ireland, also known as the Easter Rebellion, an armed insurrection in Ireland in 1916 to end British rule in Ireland and establish an independent Irish Republic.

Michel’s essay was judged by members of the LAOH chapter based in Warren. Agnes Gowdy, who is division historian for the Warren LOAH chapter, told MIchel she was impressed with her essay.

“I read your essay and was very impressed by your knowledge and research,” she said. “On behalf of the Ethel Kennedy Division of the LAOH, I want to congratulate you and thank you for your participation!”

Michel’s essay now goes to competition at the state level and, should it do well there, will then go to the national competition.
