Longtime coach, administrator and advocate for Notre Dame and its student-athletes chosen from eight U.S. finalists.
Notre Dame’s Betty Wroubel was named the National High School Athletic Coaches Association Volleyball Coach of the Year at last night’s NHSACA Annual Conference in Bismarck, North Dakota.
According to NHSACA Executive Director Dave Dougherty, Wroubel, who also serves as Notre Dame's athletic director, assistant principal and head softball coach, was nominated for the national honor by Michigan's high school coaches association and was selected as the National Coach of the Year from eight finalists who advanced in this competition from across the country.
"This selection was based on longevity, service to high school athletics, honors, championship years, and winning percentage," he said. "The nominees and finalists are evaluated by experts in the field of coaching using a sport-specific rubrics to assign points in each category. The NHSACA and MHSCA are very proud to spotlight Betty Wroubel, a person whose work and values best mirror those of the association."
Wroubel, who after 40+ years of coaching has logged more than 1,900 matches and 1,486 victories in volleyball — third most in state history, has earned three Michigan state championships (2007, 2013, 2017). Her NDP volleyball teams also have earned MIVCA ”team academic all-star” honors 25 years in a row.
The National High School Athletic Coaches Association is a 54-year-old association with nearly 335,000 members serving as athletic administrators and all levels of coaches in numerous high schools and junior high and middle schools throughout the United States. Partnering with the Michigan High School Coaches Association, the NHSACA works to promote the educational value of interscholastic athletics and the role of athletic administrators and coaches.
