Kyler Kirk, a senior at Notre Dame Preparatory School, is experiencing a summer full of government—from the state of Michigan to Washington, D.C.
In June, Kirk spent a week at Northwood University for the 77th session of Michigan’s American Legion Boys State program, which helps helps young men learn about government and how it works.
"With my experience doing Congressional Debate at Notre Dame, I decided to run for the Senate at Boys State," Kirk said. "I won the election and spent the week working on the Senate Finance Committee and going through the process of writing and voting on bills."
Currently, he's in Washington, D.C., attending Georgetown University's Fundamentals of Business Leadership in a Global Economy class. He says he's not only learning about running a business, but he's also getting a taste of college life.
Kirk also is interning in U.S. Congressman Bill Huizenga's (MI-02) office on Capitol Hill. "Some of my responsibilities include helping with tours of the Capitol, speaking with constituents, and doing congressional research on upcoming bills," he said. "I am enjoying the experience and learning the ins and outs of how the government works."
