Notre Dame senior Julia Pagnucco was among more than 200 young men and women from the state of Michigan who were honored today, May 14, by WXYZ-TV for academic achievements and community service throughout their high school careers.

For the past 37 years, Channel 7 has hosted the "Brightest and Best" special event at its WXYZ-TV headquarters in Southfield.

According to Mike Murri, vice president and general manager of WXYZ-TV, the event is a public recognition of academic achievement and commitment to community service by high school seniors in Metro Detroit.

Pagnucco is an International Baccalaureate Program candidate and an AP Scholar at Notre Dame. She is president of the Spanish National Honors Society and is a National Spanish Exam Honorable Mention winner. Pagnucco will graduate with highest honors from Notre Dame Preparatory School and will be a part of the valedictorian court. She has spent three years on the varsity lacrosse team, receiving a Scholar-Athlete Award nomination and an All-League award. She also has spent three years volunteering at Crittenton Hospital as a “Crittenteen,” and also has participated in mentoring elementary school students and teaching them leadership skills in a program called "Head, Heart, Feet."

Pagnucco plans to attend the University of Michigan in the fall, majoring in biomedical engineering with a minor in Spanish.
