Notre Dame Prep's AP-IB Spanish class took a break from their studies on Friday to learn how to make “mate,” a traditional South American caffeine-rich infused drink, particularly in Argentina (where it is defined by law as the "national infusion"), with former NDP Spanish intern teacher (2012) Matteo Pereyra.
While the NDP students sipped on tea in Pontiac in their classroom, Pereyra, who was in Argentina, taught them via Skype how to make this traditional Argentine tea. Once everyone was comfortably sipping their tea, Pereyra and the students chatted about "Casa Tomada,” a magical realism short story by Argentine writer Julio Cortazar.
Pereyra, who has his degree in Spanish literature from the University of Cordoba, Argentina, was able to enlighten the upper division students with some inside information of the "Casa Tomada,” since he recently studied under a professor who was a close friend of the author.
