On September 20, Notre Dame’s equestrian team will be competing for the first time this season at an event held at the Armada Fairgrounds. According to former team captain Theresa Schmid and an NDP alum (’13), the 2015 edition of the team looks to do well at that event and the rest of the season.

“The team won the district championship last year for the first time in team history, and are very well placed to do the same this year,” she said. “And they look forward to competing well at the regional and state levels as well.”

Notre Dame Prep's equestrian team, which is coached by Stephanie Bean, participates in the Michigan Interscholastic Horsemanship Association (MIHA) against other district 2 schools, including Armada, Brandon, Clarkston, Dryden, Goodrich, Imlay City, International Academy, Lake Orion, Lapeer East, Lapeer West, Marian, Oxford, Rochester, Rochester Adams, Romeo, Sacred Heart, Shrine and Stoney Creek.

Schmid said the girls work very hard before and during the season. She noted that probably most not connected with the sport do not really know the extent to which team members go to make sure they and their horses are well prepared for each competition. “It’s really hard work,” she said.

Currently a student at New York University working toward a degree in media, culture, and communication, Schmid recently put together a video (below) that highlights the team’s successful 2014 season and all of the work that went into it.
