ND Freshmen and Sophomores Fare Well at Novice Quiz Bowl

In a Novice Quiz Bowl tournament held Saturday at Detroit Catholic Central High School, a team of Notre Dame Prep 9th and 10th graders finished strong individually and as a team.

Novice quiz bowls are held periodically to provide an introduction quiz bowl without any prior experience and to demonstrate how much fun quiz bowls can be.

Out of a total of 20 high school teams, NDP “team A,” with Chase Glasser (captain), Richie Frost, Maddie Allard, Anthony Van Dieren and Calvin Burns, finished second overall. NDP “team B,” with Halaina Jimenez, Jessica Jimenez (captain), Alex Kocheril, Ian Kaiser and Cory Ness, finished in eighth.

According to Notre Dame’s Quiz Bowl moderator and science teach Sue Wylie, of the 80-plus players competing Saturday, Richie Frost was in the top ten, and Anthony Van Dieren, Madeline Allard, Jessica Jimenez and Chase Glasser finished in the top 30 players.

Novice quiz bowls are held periodically to provide an introduction to standard quiz bowl for students in grades nine and 10 without any prior experience.

About Quiz Bowl: At the high school level, quiz bowl is a competitive, academic and interscholastic activity for which players attend periodic practices and then represent their school at varsity tournaments. Those tournaments may be based on the school’s athletic conference, school district, county, or state; they may also be open to all schools. Quiz bowl questions range over the entire spectrum of a high school curriculum and also include a certain amount of current events, sports and popular culture. Matches feature a blend of individual competition and team collaboration, since no individual player is likely to be an expert in all subject areas. Quiz bowl can reinforce classroom lessons and also encourage players to go beyond their assignments to master other areas as well.
