Notre Dame ’J-Walkers’ spend a week helping local families in need.
Last week, seven members of the Notre Dame community — current students and recent grads — worked in the Oxford and Lake Orion communities helping families and institutions in need of repair, maintenance and general labor.
According to Andy Guest, Notre Dame’s interim president, the young men and women once again demonstrated that they continue to live the school mission of being Christian people and upright citizens, even during summer vacation and after graduation.
“We see this again and again with our students and former students,” he said. “When they could be relaxing or having fun during their free time, they instead step up to help those in our community whose needs never take a vacation.”
The Notre Dame group joined 40 other students from St. Joseph’s parish in Lake Orion. They were organized as part of the parish youth group’s “J-Walkers: Project People” initiative, which sends the young people out to repair decks, replace roofs, paint barns, rebuild a library and other manual chores directly benefiting the poor and needy in the north Oakland County area.
During the week of work, the “J-Walkers” and the other participants stayed at the St. Benedict Monastery, the current mother house of the Benedictines of Detroit, located in Oxford.
