Artwork by Notre Dame seventh-grade student Chloe Fazzini.
Last semester, students in art teacher Matthew McGuire's seventh- and eighth-grade Art Exploration class studied the impact that modern-day aviation has had on the world.
Students researched various types of aircraft and each chose one to draw using the grid method. Grid drawing is a centuries-old art method where accuracy, observation and strong values of darks and lights are critical to a drawing's success.
Dr. Scott Walter, a Notre Dame Marist parent, was a guest speaker for the day, offering his time and knowledge to speak to the kids about the history of aviation. Students also viewed historical documentaries including those on the explosion of the Hindenburg as well as one on Detroit native Charles Lindbergh’s historic solo flight from New York to Paris.
