Students at Notre Dame's middle school began the 2014 edition of International Day with an Indian dance in the cafeteria at 7:45 a.m. The day is hosted and organized by the international parents and friends within the NDMA community in partnership with the Parents Club and the staff of the middle division. Field trips have been scheduled for the afternoon.
The half-day event at the Pontiac campus features students traveling to various classrooms, which have been transformed into country pavilions, where they learn from parent country chairpersons about different aspects of life in each International Day country. They also explore international history, traditions, arts, geography, customs and cuisine through presentations and exhibits.
According to organizers, International Day was designed to promote the multicultural mosaic of the Notre Dame community and creates harmony between different cultures through an event of mutual respect and cooperation. They said this multicultural celebration provided a unique learning opportunity for students who experienced "the spirit of tolerance and respect as they enjoyed international celebration dances and entertainment, culinary delicacies, and the rich and varied traditions and heritage of the many cultures that make the Notre Dame Marist Academy community their home."
