Marist educators wrap up conference and workshop

Society of Mary founder Father Jean-Claude Colin’s gentle philosophy of education, emphasizing an even-handed and fair approach for all, builds on the Marist characteristics of mercy and compassion. It has always been Marist to accept the young person as a gift from God and to encourage and mentor them as they grow in wisdom and confidence.

With that philosophy as a backdrop, more than 30 educators from North American and New Zealand schools owned or sponsored by the Society of Mary concluded today the 2019 Marist Educators Conference and Workshop, which this year was sponsored by NDPMA and held on the school's main campus.

The three-day event, the seventh such annual meeting, was designed to provide a forum to share more information about the Society of Mary and its history and philosophy of education with lay teachers and staff members at Marist schools from around the world.

According to Fr. Joe Hindelang, s.m., principal of Notre Dame Preparatory School, this week's conference/workshop was a time to meet and share ideas with colleagues from Marist schools in Mexico, Canada, New Zealand, Atlanta and Pontiac. Fr. Paul Frechette, s.m., who heads the U.S. Province of Marists, also was on hand this week at the event.

Among presenters and workshop leaders this week were Fr. Jim Strasz, s.m., Fr. Mark Walls, s.m., Rachel Farrington and Matt Newman, who discussed topics ranging from "The Society of Mary, Fr. Colin and the Marist Charism" to "The future – what can we do at our schools to add to our Marist identity."

Off-campus, conference participants were treated with a tour of downtown Detroit and a Detroit Tigers baseball game.

The Marist Fathers and Brothers of the United States Province are part of a worldwide community with provinces and districts in Africa, Asia, Australia, Canada, Europe, Mexico, New Zealand, Oceania and South America.
