Students and faculty members in Notre Dame’s lower division today celebrated International Day 2016, a day-long multicultural festival of food, music, dancing, and guided instruction on the history and geography of many different countries.
“Notre Dame provides a continuum of international education,” said Paul Frank, the lower division’s International Baccalaureate PYP Coordinator. “Education for international mindedness relies on the development of learning environments that value the world as one community, and one of the ways the school does this is with our annual International Day.”
Frank said the school uses its rich diversity as a resource and brings in presenters from the school community who are invited to the classrooms to celebrate and share information about a variety of different cultures with the students. This year the students learned about the following countries: Romania, Philippines, Iraq, Germany, Mexico, Poland, England, Taiwan and India. The kids enjoyed traveling from room to room for thirty-minute presentations given by parent volunteers and school staff members.
“One of our school goals is to build each student’s self-awareness of the attitudes, perceptions, abilities and actions that are necessary to live in an ever-changing global community,” Frank said. “A special thank you to Mrs. Chow-Wah, Mrs. Muqueem, Profesora Trinidad and all the presenters and parent volunteers. We are fortunate to have so many mission-driven families who are willing to help with these activities.”
