IB visual artists continue to set records

Among the record 66 International Baccalaureate Diploma Program candidates who were celebrated on April 23 in a ceremony held in Notre Dame’s media center were 17 who are part of the Notre Dame IB Visual Art program.

Those in attendance at the IB ceremony on Monday also had an opportunity to check out those artists in the 2018 Notre Dame Student Art Show and IB Exhibition, which opened April 10 and runs through April 26.

According to Sandy LewAllen, chair of Notre Dame’s art department and who curated this year’s art show, the 17 IB artists represent the largest IB Visual Art graduating class in the school's history.

"Not only are these students wonderful artists, they are wonderful people," LewAllen said. "I'm going to really miss this group!"

Earlier this year, NDP student-artists earned a total of 50 regional awards in the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards competition for the Southeastern Michigan region, beating last year's 45 awards for the school, which was a big increase from the 2016 school record of 27 awards.

According to LewAllen, earning 50 awards tops the number of awards ever won at Notre Dame Prep and is one of the largest groups from any school in the region, including very large public schools such as Stoney Creek and Novi. “I couldn't be any more proud of all of our art students and their efforts,” she said back in January when the awards were first announced.

The school exhibition is open daily during school hours.
