IB Diploma Candidates Honored at Notre Dame

Thirty-seven International Baccalaureate Diploma Program candidates were celebrated on April 16 in a ceremony held in Notre Dame’s media center.

According to IB-DP coordinator Kim Anderson, it was a special way to recognize the hard work, dedication and talent of the seniors who are heading into the IB examination period next month and also the NDP juniors in the program who will follow in their footsteps.

All of the seniors on hand at the event were available after the ceremony to discuss the extended essays they had spent so much time on during the year. Three seniors, Angela Fan, Robert Joseph and Oana Danciu, were called to the podium to present summaries of their extended essay topics to family, faculty members and friends in attendance.

Fan’s topic was on the “Effect of Electromagnetic Radiation on Brain Activity” and focused specifically on EM radiation emitted from cell phones. Joseph discussed “HBO’s The Wire as a Great American Novel” and to what extent it conforms to the traditional ideal of a Great American Novel. Danciu presented a summary of her extended essay, “Medical Developments During the Interwar Crisis,” which dealt with medical developments between 1914 and 1945 and how they affected the care of soldiers during World War II.

Also last night, all seniors in attendance were given special sashes that identify them as IB Diploma Program candidates when they graduate from Notre Dame.

Ryan Roose, one of the candidates, said the IB program has had a profound effect on him as a student and person. “IB has opened my mind to a lot of possibilities and a new style of thinking that previously I was not exposed to,” he said. “It has allowed me to apply my own skills and talents to real world situations and find a path in life where I can make a real difference in the lives of other people.”
