Winter and Spring breaks as well as days off throughout the year can be excellent opportunities to visit your prospective colleges. Schedule your visits at least two weeks in advance.

Juniors and their parents: Opportunities for admission are often directly related to student academic performance and proper early preparation. Your counselor can be a good resource for you. Take a look at the "Junior to do list" for general guidelines. Helpful links and information regarding college and ACT preparation have been posted on Naviance. Students will be receiving additional information during their individual interviews with their counselor.

Juniors and Sophomores... Many universities offer some sort of pre-college summer camps, providing students with an opportunity to explore various career fields and develop leadership skills.  Consider doing a summer camp, job shadowing, internship, or part time job in the career field of your interest.  This experience may make you more desirable to college admission representatives.  Check out this link for additional info

College Update

Students should sign up for colleges you are considering before the stated deadlines in order to receive a pass. More than 40 colleges have contacted the counseling department and scheduled their visits to meet with you.

It's a good time for students to learn more about a college and it's an opportunity for students to meet the representatives who will probably be the ones reading their applications. It is also one of several ways for students to indicate "demonstrated interest,'' a factor that some colleges use in their admission decisions. New colleges are added daily, and some spaces may be limited.

Keep your eye on the visiting colleges' schedule on your Naviance "colleges" page. Consider international schools as well.

Girls:

Juniors and sophomores, consider applying to the Joyce Ivy Foundation summer programs on campuses of highly selective schools at free or reduced cost.

Interested in medicine or engineering as a career? Consider the Perry Initiative. Additional information can be found on their website, www.perryinitiative.org  Look for upcoming dates in Detroit. Spots are limited and selective. Apply early.

Seniors

The transcript request option on Naviance will be disabled for Christmas break, beginning on Dec. 20. Please plan accordingly.

Dec. 1 is the deadline to complete the FAFSA to maximize your opportunity for need-based scholarships and/or low-interest government loans.

Juniors

Start adding colleges you are interested in on your Naviance account. Begin researching and visiting colleges when opportunities arise.

Juniors and Sophomores

Many colleges offer summer pre-college programs and are starting to accept applications. Check with the school you are interested in to see if they offer any programs you would like to attend or learn more about.

Freshmen

Your counselor will be calling you down for an individual meeting soon. If you need to see your counselor prior to an arranged meeting, please take a moment to come in and sign up for an appointment to meet your counselor.
