Computer-aided-design class visits UD Mercy

Students are dual-enrolled in UD Mercy and Notre Dame's computer-aided design class.

Students in Katrina Palushaj’s upper division intermediate computer aided design (CATIA V6) class traveled to the University of Detroit Mercy’s Detroit campus today to visit with faculty, tour the engineering, chemistry and engineering labs and witness demonstrations in the chemistry lab. According to Palushaj, the students are dual-enrolled in CAD class at both Notre Dame Prep and UD Mercy.

Meghann Murray, a staffer at UD Mercy, also put the Notre Dame students through a number of demonstrations, including competing in a “gumdrop challenge,” where they had to design and create structures using only straws and gumdrops.

Seniors Logan Hand, Dakota Burnett and Olivia Heming’s structure took the top prize in the challenge.

Murray, who also founded the science “café,” Brewing Chemistry, which provides a networking opportunity for students, faculty and professionals to discuss ideas and research that may lead to potential collaborations, said she loves sharing her love of chemistry.

“These sessions have also been a great way to introduce chemistry to students and to the general public. Hosting these informal lectures helps to explain how chemistry is truly a part of everything.”

Murray also conducted a number of demonstrations in UD Mercy’s iNSPIRE Laboratory, including having NDP junior Jack Hannon pour dry ice directly on her arm. See video.
