Five students from Notre Dame’s upper division spent lunch today at Cobo Center in downtown Detroit as special student guests of the Detroit Economic Club for presentations and speeches by southeast Michigan’s “big four” government executives.
The juniors and seniors who made the trip downtown with Andy Guest, Notre Dame’s executive vice president, were chosen because of their interest in business and technology, good academic standing, and a willingness to experience a “real-world,” high-profile gathering of business and government executives. In November, Guest took a number of Notre Dame students to another DEC luncheon that featured Dell Computer founder Michael Dell.
Notre Dame juniors Rachel Alef and Carl Wacker, and seniors Nick Wasik, Luke Mullis and Dave Pohlman listened to the “big four,” a.k.a. Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan, Wayne County Executive Warren C. Evans, Macomb County Executive Mark Hackel, and Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson, discuss regional successes, issues and their plans to drive the southeast Michigan region forward.
Reports say the Flint water crisis and Detroit’s public schools were “hot” topics also discussed today along with the need for more investment in regional mass transit and other infrastructure.
The meeting took place in conjunction with the 2016 North American International Auto Show and included the unveiling of the 2016 Detroit News Readers Choice Awards winners, which were topped by Ford’s Lincoln Continental, earning "best in show."
