Michael Carman, a social studies teacher at Notre Dame Preparatory School, has been selected as an NEH Summer Scholar from a nation-wide applicant pool. As a result, he will attend one of seventeen NEH Landmarks of American History and Culture Workshops. The National Endowment for the Humanities is a federal agency that each year supports summer study opportunities so that teachers can work with experts in humanities disciplines.
The NEH workshops enable teachers to make connections between the best scholarship about historical sites and classroom teaching.
Carman will participate in a workshop entitled “America’s Industrial Revolution,” which is a one-week program to be held this summer at The Henry Ford in Dearborn and is directed by Paula Gangopadhyay.
Topics for the seventeen NEH Landmarks of American History and Culture Workshops offered for teachers this summer include Abraham Lincoln and the Forging of Modern America; The American Skyscraper: Transforming Chicago and the Nation; America’s Industrial Revolution at The Henry Ford; The California Gold Rush: Many Contexts, Many Histories; and The Cold War Home Front in Southern California.
The approximately 1,360 teachers who participate in these studies will teach more than 170,000 American students the following year.
