Notre Dame senior spends month in Washington at leadership conference

a-carty-250pxAmanda Carty, who will be a senior at Notre Dame when school begins August 21, spent the better part of the month of July in Washington, D.C., in a conference sponsored by the National Student Leadership Foundation, which counts more than 366 members of the U.S. Congress on its board of advisers.

Among the programs and seminars offered at the conference in Washington were biotechnology, forensic science, international diplomacy and political action & public policy.

Carty, an International Baccalaureate student in the Diploma Program at NDP, also received and unexpected invitation from Michigan Senator Debbie Stabenow to spend time with her and her staff during Carty's stay in the nation’s capital. 

Active and involved student

Along with a substantial schedule of classes at Notre Dame, Carty has been involved with many extracurricular activities for the school. She was captain of the NDP debate team where she went undefeated in league debates and serves as an editor for the school student newspaper.

She plays on Notre Dame’s varsity volleyball team, is a member of the National Honor Society, the varsity club and has served on the student IT help desk. Her “Make-It-Matter” project worked with children in foster care for the Genesee County Children’s Advocacy Program. 

Carty’s career plans include work in the area of political bioethics.
