The diverse and extensive list of courses offered at Notre Dame’s upper division just got more diverse and extensive. According to Notre Dame’s Joanne Widmaier, who is currently putting together the students’ master schedules for the upcoming school year, there will be three new courses offered for the fall term and four new in the spring.
International Baccalaureate/Advanced Placement Mandarin Chinese and Forensic Psychology are two of the courses new to Notre Dame this year.
The IB/AP Mandarin Chinese course is designed to provide students with various opportunities to further improve proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills and the appreciation of Chinese culture, history and literature. As this is a combined International Baccalaureate and Advanced Placement course in Chinese, additional time will be spent familiarizing the students with the various sections of the IB/AP Chinese language examinations.
Forensic Psychology is designed to explore many topics as they apply to the psychology of crime and the psychology behind decisions and procedures of Law. Topics to be explored specifically are: criminal profiling, divorce, child custody, determining whether a person can stand on trial, expert testimony, personnel selection in law enforcement, stress debriefing in law enforcement, treatment programs for offenders, psychology of people who commit major crimes (terrorism, etc.), why people are repeat offenders, juvenile justice, and PTSD.
According to Widmaier, most students made their course requests back in early April with parent approval. “Then in May we determine the number of class sections per course and other needs according to the student requests,” she said.
Widmaier said that for this fall term, a total of 99 courses are planned for Notre Dame Prep, and 100 courses will be on the schedule in the spring session.
The first full day of school for Notre Dame’s upper division is August 21.
