Notre Dame Prep Graduate Wins Rare National Scholarship

6548PONTIAC, Mich.— Fr. Joseph Hindelang, s.m., principal of Notre Dame Preparatory School in Pontiac, announced today that Annmarie Craig, who graduated from Notre Dame Prep on May 18, has been selected to receive a $1,000 National Honor Society Scholarship in the state finalist category of this year's scholarship competition. As a result, Craig is recognized as one of the top 200 NHS members in the nation this school year.

It is the first time in Notre Dame Prep history that one of its students has achieved such recognition.

The National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP), parent organization of the National Honor Society (NHS), has awarded more than $11 million in scholarships to outstanding NHS members since 1946. This year, 200 NHS finalists were chosen from nearly 5,000 applicants. Each of the finalists will receive the $1,000 scholarship to continue their education.

Melissa Archer, a modern language and English teacher at Notre Dame Prep and NHS advisor, said that she is proud of Craig. "Her demonstrated leadership, character and service, which are important pillars of the NHS, were especially apparent when she planned and executed a Red Cross Blood Drive last September," Archer said. "I can say that she truly is a talented, purposed-driven, caring individual."

High school NHS chapters from across the country were eligible to nominate a limited number of senior NHS members to compete. Nominees are selected on the basis of their leadership skills, participation in service organizations and clubs, achievements in the arts and sciences, and general academic record.

“Students nominated for the NHS scholarship not only demonstrate academic excellence, but also
excel in the areas of service, leadership and character,” said NHS Associate Director David Cordts. “In recognizing leadership in co-curricular activities as well as academic performance, the NHS Scholarship program highlights the importance of a well-rounded education.”

The NHS Scholarship program, in existence since 1946, annually recognizes 200 of the nation’s
top high school seniors who are members of NHS.

While at Notre Dame Prep, in addition to being an NHS member, Craig was an AP Scholar and has received numerous awards and recognitions, including the President's Award for Educational Excellence, the Michigan Competitive Scholarship, and certificates for excellence in chorus, English, mathematics, religious studies and science. She will be attending the University of Michigan in the fall to study biology.
