Two Notre Dame Alums And Booster Club Honored At Hall Of Fame Event

Two former Notre Dame athletes and the school's booster club were honored June 9 at the Detroit Catholic High School League (CHSL) Hall of Fame banquet.

Destiny Tolliver '10 (Notre Dame Prep), a captain on the University of New Hampshire's volleyball team during her senior year, and Doug Brown, a former steeplechase Olympian who graduated from Notre Dame High School in Harper Woods in 1970, were inducted into the CHSL Hall of Fame. Tolliver was inducted because she is a graduating college senior athlete, and Brown was inducted as an "alumni" athlete since he graduated from college before the CHSL began inducting college seniors in 1976.

In accepting his award, Brown said, "I am very grateful for the opportunity that I had to attend Notre Dame. If it wasn’t for former teachers such as Conrad Vachon, Hal Rice and Roy Johnson, I wouldn’t have been the person that I am today. Also, I am very grateful to Fr. Leon, Fr. Joe Hindelang, Mike Kelly, Betty Wroubel and all my friends at Notre Dame Prep who have welcomed me home with open arms."

In addition, NDPMA's booster club was honored as the league's Booster Club of the Year at the annual event, which was held at the Fern Hill Golf and Country Club in Clinton Township.

Booster Club of the Year: According to the CHSL, which consistently recognizes the importance of parent boosters to its league-member schools, Notre Dame Prep's booster club was "commended for supporting your school and the Notre Dame Preparatory School athletic community. The sound athletic program and the solid education that is your trademark are due in part to your organization's active role and commitment to growth. Congratulations on the many accomplishments of your group."

Mike Durkin, NDPMA's booster club president added, "What a tremendous accomplishment and I couldn't be prouder of each of you as well as the very supportive parent community and administration at Notre Dame Prep and Marist Academy!"

Destiny Tolliver: Tolliver was a four-year starter with Notre Dame Prep and member of the school's 2007 state championship team. (She actually hit the match-winning shot in the title game.) She was a three-time All-Stater at NDP, All Catholic, All League, All Region and All County. She also earned Academic All State each of her four years in high school and was AVCA national All Academic for four years.

At the University of New Hampshire, Tolliver led her team to the America East title in 2013 and accumulated 357 career blocks, the third highest in school history. She earned the America East Commissioner's Honor Roll in 2013 and the America East Academic Honor Roll in 2010, 2011 and 2012, and was named to the America East All-Rookie team in 2010.

"Destiny is by far one of the hardest working student-athletes I have ever worked with," said her UNH coach Jill Hirschinger. "She was named captain of our team her senior year and led by example all year. Destiny truly was a huge reason we won the America East championship for the first time in 10 years."

Tolliver will earn a degree in biology from the University of Hew Hampshire.

Doug Brown: Brown was a track and cross-country star at Notre Dame High School and went on to set the world on fire at the University of Tennessee and as an Olympian. He qualified for the Olympics three times (1972, 1976, 1980) and was a two-time American record holder and a five-time national college champion (Tennessee) in steeplechase.

During his senior year at NDHS, he won the Michigan class A state championship in cross country and was the cross-country champion in the CHSL in 1967 and 1969. In 1970, Brown was the Catholic League mile champion and placed second in the Golden West Two-Mile.

After graduating from the University of Tennessee, he went on to coach track and cross country at Tennessee and the University of Florida where he earned an NCAA championship and 12 top-five NCAA team finishes. He was named NCAA coach of the year in 1991 and earned SEC coach-of-the-year honors 11 times in his coaching career. In addition, Brown coached 83 college athletes to 175 All-American honors and mentored and coached seven who went on to the Olympics.

Brown was honored at Notre Dame Prep during its 2012 football homecoming game, where he donated his NDHS letter sweater to Notre Dame Prep.
