Three questions for Chef Jim

Head of Notre Dame's food service says students will be driving the menu choices in the cafeteria even more during this school year​.

When students return to the Notre Dame campus in a few weeks, among some of the changes and improvement they will notice will be those planned for the school's dining and food-service operation.

According to James Davis, or "Chef Jim," who is the manager of Flik Independent School Dining's operation at the school, he said his team of food and nutrition experts is dedicated entirely to creating fun, healthful and innovative dining solutions for the Notre Dame community. And that won't change this year.

So to find out what's new or what's been going on in NDPMA's cafeteria, we presented Chef Jim with three questions.

1. What's new in terms of food choices this year at Notre Dame?

Fresh-made granola is new this year and I hope to incorporate fresh-made deli loafs on the fresh-made sandwich line. In addition, I can say that we also plan to have a new "student-choice day" twice a month starting in September. I will meet with the student council and they will pick the two items they want to see on the menu for that month. Basically, my overall theme this year is to let the students drive the menu items with the help of student council.
 
2. What about facilities or equipment? 

We are installing a new walk-in cooler in a few weeks, which will allow for more space and larger options for the "grab-and-go" station.
 
3. Can you list which “entrees” or menu items were the most popular with the kids during the last school year?
 
Well, an unscientific assessment says that the top five during the last school year were tacos, grilled cheese, breaded chicken tenders, pizza, which will be served every other Friday this year, and finally, items from our Asian food menu also were very popular.
