NDP students take a virtual tour of street art in Colombia

A number of Notre Dame Prep students in Margarita Billings' Spanish 10 class got a chance recently to study street art and graffiti that is prominent in Latin America. According to Billings, they not only investigated the artwork itself, they tried to determine the various artists' intents and messaging.

"My students took a three-day virtual journey to explore the messages and meanings of street art murals and graffiti common in Bogotá, Colombia, which is where I am originally from, and in other cities in Latin America," said Billings, who teaches world languages and Spanish to Notre Dame's upper school students. "My students also read about the booming graffiti art trend in Bogotá, listened to an interview with a famous street artist, and monitored a TED talk in Spanish about different kinds of typefaces and fonts."

She said the students also created their own pieces of street art on the Notre Dame campus to communicate their own messages to an audience.

"Students were super-enthusiastic about this 'journey,' and enjoyed connecting their own works to what they learned about public art in urban spaces," she said.
