NDP’s Maddy Chinn in the running for top athlete in the state

Ceremony at the Detroit Athletic Club this morning honored Chinn and 11 other student athletes.

Add the nomination as one of the State of Michigan's top student-athletes to Notre Dame Prep senior Maddy Chinn's many accolades. She was so honored this morning at the Detroit Athletic Club as potentially the No.-1 female high school athlete in the state. She joined five other female student-athletes and six male student-athletes at the club as nominees for one of Michigan's most prestigious high school honor.

In November, Chinn, who will be attending Purdue University in the fall, was named Michigan's Miss Volleyball for 2018 in a ceremony in front of her school classmates at Notre Dame. In addition, she was named an All-American by four different organizations; an MIVCA scholarship winner; a Detroit Free Press Sports Awards volleyball finalist; All-Region: 2017 (1st Team), 2016 (1st Team), 2015 (1st Team); Individual Academic All-State (2018); and was part of Notre Dame's 2017 Class B State championship team.

Betty Wroubel, Chinn's volleyball coach and NDPMA's athletic director, couldn't be more delighted with today's ceremony and announcement.

"Maddy's contributions to the volleyball program are, of course, off the charts," Wroubel said. "But more significantly, she is the consummate teammate, a stellar student and very dedicated to the work she's done over the years with Special Olympics and other community initiatives. I'm really going to miss her."

Chinn was joined by her parents and Wroubel today along with her fellow DAC nominees in attending the DAC Breakfast of Champions at the venerable downtown institution — and they will return there on May 13 when the award is announced. Sponsored by the DAC and its DAC Foundation, the Michigan High School Athlete of the Year award holds significant benefits, even for nominees.

According to Shannon Murray, the DAC's athletic development director, Chinn and her fellow nominees were introduced to those in attendance at the DAC; received a banner announcing her as a Michigan High School Athlete of the Year nominee; and was interviewed by Lorne Plant of State Champs.

If Chinn is chosen as the top female High School Athlete of the Year, she will receive a $5,000 scholarship and further recognition at the May 13 event.

Nominees for the award were chosen based on a number of criterion, including being a member of a senior class, demonstrated excellence in athletics in MHSAA-sanctioned sports, a state ranking, demonstrated excellence in scholastics, including a grade point average of 3.0 or greater, excellent ACT/SAT/PSAT scores, and recognized citizenship that includes school leadership, community involvement and volunteerism.
