On Friday, April 27, Notre Dame’s lower division will host its eighth annual “Exhibition,” the culmination of the years spent studying within the International Baccalaureate's Primary Years Program. This year, Notre Dame fifth graders will present the results of their extended inquiry focused on the transdisciplinary theme, “Who We Are," which has the students inquiring about things that make us human and the challenges we face.
According to lower division math specialist and PYP coordinator Paul Frank, as a class the 5th graders chose 11 issues in society to bring awareness in hopes of making the world a better place.
"Also, to help drum up interest within the Notre Dame community for all their hard work, the students put together YouTube video commercials that define each of their subject areas," Frank added. See below for the video commercials.
The Exhibition represents a significant event in the life of both the school and the student, as it synthesizes the essential elements of the PYP, and shares them with the whole school community.
“The fifth graders worked individually and in small groups to conduct their research, locate sources of information, create display boards, and develop an action plan to affect positive change as it relates to their topics,” Frank said.
Among the topics chosen by the students within the central theme were nutrition, sleep deprivation, mental illness and vaping.
“Research methods used by the students included field trips and interviews with experts, which aided the groups in determining their action plans,” Frank said. “These actions represent huge student efforts for making a positive impact in the local and global community.”
The exhibition will be held Friday, April 27, 6:30 p.m., in the William Kozyra Assembly Hall located at Notre Dame’s lower-division campus. All are welcome.
