It was a big night for Notre Dame student-artists as they took home prestigious Scholastic Art honors at an award ceremony held Wednesday evening at the Detroit Film Theater, which is located in the Detroit Institute of Arts in the city's Cultural Center.

According to Sandy LewAllen, chair of Notre Dame's visual arts department, the awards were well-deserved. She said that two of her art students, Calvin Burns and Reagan Kazyak, were even featured in the event program.

The Notre Damers earned 17 Scholastic awards in all this year, the most ever in one year for the school.

“What an awesome and prestigious honor this is,” LewAllen said. "I am so proud of all our art students and their tremendous efforts!”

The actual exhibition of student art is being held at the College for Creative Studies in Detroit and runs for two weeks. See the award-winning NDP artwork at right.

About the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards
The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards have an impressive legacy dating back to 1923. Over the years, the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards have grown to become the longest-running, most prestigious program for creative teens in the U.S., and the nation’s largest source of scholarships for creative young artists and writers. A noteworthy roster of past winners includes Andy Warhol, Sylvia Plath, Truman Capote, Richard Avedon, Robert Redford, Joyce Carol Oates, Stephen King and John Updike.

The process begins across the country as young artists and writers in grades 7-12 submit work in 28 categories of art and writing to a network of regional affiliates who present award ceremonies and exhibits for selected works on a local level. Gold Keys, the highest awards, are then submitted from each region for national adjudication by luminaries in the visual and literary arts, some of whom are past award recipients. National Gold and Silver Medal winning students and their teachers receive national recognition, and are invited to attend the exhibit in New York and award ceremony at Carnegie Hall.

Over 6,200 individual entries and 250 senior portfolios were judged this past weekend by teams of artists, filmmakers, photographers, designers and art educators. After many hours, and careful and sometimes lively deliberation, they selected 300 Gold Keys, 375 Silver Keys and 426 Honorable Mentions. 83 Gold Key Portfolios were selected from 250 submitted, seven were selected “Best of Show” and five Gold Key works were selected as American Vision Nominees. All Gold Key work will be judged at the national level in March.
