A.P. Psychology in Sensation/Perception Lab

Students in John Smith and Brian Perry’s A.P. Psychology classes are going through their annual “sensation/perception” lab, which takes students from one demonstration to another for two days as they experience different sensations and explore their perceptions of the sensations.

According to Smith, the demos range from identifying different types of objects by feel only; identifying different types of smells blindfolded; putting on distortion glasses and trying to make a basket with a basketball; and trying to work a locker combination upside down.

“Another demo,” he said, “is using a ‘miracle fruit’ to change the flavor profile of food from sour to sweet. The kids really had a blast!”

Similar to those found in college-level psychology courses, the lab at NDP considers sensation and perception from several perspectives: physiological, psychophysical, ecological, motivational, and computational.
