Several world language students from Notre Dame recently achieved national recognition for excellent performance on the 2017 National Spanish Examinations, earning a total of two gold medals, four silver medals and four bronze medals, along with 26 honorable mentions. This year's examination results nearly matched last year's record 50 award winners.
"Attaining a medal or honorable mention for any student on the National Spanish Examinations is very prestigious," said Kevin Cessna-Buscemi, national director of the exams, "because the exams are the largest of their kind in the United States with over 150,000 students participating in 2017.”
The National Spanish Examinations are administered each year in grades 6-12, and are sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese. These exams measure proficiency and achievement in the areas of vocabulary, grammar, reading and listening.
NDP students earnings awards this year were: two golds: Alberto Martinez-Garcia (12) and Evaristo Garcia-Reyna (10), four silvers: Montserrat Dorantes (12), Sean Higgins (11), Joseph Joppich (10) and Christopher Vandieron (10).
The bronze award winners included Notre Dame's Maria Sanchez-Rodriguez (12), Anna Miklas (11), Lorena Dorantes (10) and Megan Obear ’10).
The 26 honorable mentions from Notre Dame were Rodolfo Aguilar-Fernandez ’12, Diego Collazo (12), Halaina Jimenez (12), Jessica Jimenez (12), Mariel Manzor (12), Erica Nowosielski (12), Chase Glasser (12), Luke Adams (12), Madeline Allard (12), Eileen Haig (12), Gabrielle Jacoby (12), Anna Madison (12), Nicole Oska (12), Rebecca Petrella (12), Michael Sitto (12), Anna Hein (11), Ajay Sheth (11), Malini Mukherji (11), Abigail Rankin (11), Matthew Sitto (11), Carmen Aranda (11), Juliet Jacoby (10), Maura Kruse (10), Ana Sanchez (10), Grace Mersino (10) and Joshua Montpas (10).
