Three choirs from Notre Dame’s upper division traveled to Brighton High School last Friday, April 7, to take part in the annual Michigan School Vocal Music Association (MSVMA) district festival. Two of the school’s three choirs received an excellent rating, which qualified them for the upcoming state festival.
MSVMA hosts district and state festivals throughout the state. Choirs that participate are required to prepare two selections to be performed for three judges and to sight-read an unfamiliar selection of music for a fourth judge. Each judge may award a choir up to 30 points creating a possible combined total of 120. In addition, choirs may participate at one of three levels: primary, intermediate or advanced.
“Our Honors Chamber Choir received an excellent rating with a score of 107 at the advanced level,” said Dave Fazzini, Notre Dame’s choir director. “The Irishmen received an excellent rating with a score of 98 at the primary level and the women's chorus received a good rating with a score of 94 at the primary level, just missing the ‘excellent’ threshold by two points.”
He said the school’s two choirs that received an excellent rating will be singing at the state festival in May.
