NDP Senior Wins National Cycling Championship

On July 27, Notre Dame Prep senior Danielle Mullis was crowned National Track Cycling Champion in Trexlertown, PA. She won the title after competing in five events that make up the Omnium National Championship series. The first event was a points race where she came second followed by a sprint competition, which she won. Next came a third place in the 2K individual pursuit, a first in the scratch race and a sixth in a 500M time trial. Adding it all up, Mullis ended up earning the overall title.

Mullis went on to win another national championship, this time in the 3K team pursuit where she teamed with two other riders from the east coast. Not to be outdone, her brother Luke, a sophomore at NDP, also won a silver medal in the team pursuit, teaming with three boys from Chicago.

Danielle and Luke then moved on to Rimouski, Quebec, where from July 31 to August 4 they took part in the Rimouski Stage Race. According to race participants, the event is like a mini Tour de France in an area of Quebec strongly influenced by the French. It is a very prestigious event and Danielle won the Criterium race against 50 other girls aged 15-18. The event was televised live and Danielle was interviewed by ESPN after the race.
