Notre Dame's boys soccer team helps out Dominican sisters at Ortonville monastery.
Using rakes, leaf blowers and good old-fashioned muscle power, the Notre Dame boys soccer team spent the day Saturday at the Our Lady of Mount Thabor Monastery in Ortonville working on the grounds, which desperately needed a “spruce-up.” Coach Rob Suffredini and a number of parent volunteers, including Laura Pangori, organized the service day for the group that included both JV and varsity team members as well as parents.
“All of the sisters wanted to thank Coach Rob for his support in leading the boys soccer team to a job well done,” said Pangori. “The grounds look beautiful, and it is appreciated by the nuns more than words can be expressed.”
More about the sisters:
Our Lady of Mount Thabor Monastery and the Dominican sisters have their roots originally in Union City, New Jersey, where they opened up their first monastery. They moved to a different location in West Virginia before settling in Ortonville in 1973. The sisters are cloistered, meaning they do not leave the monastery except for necessities like medical care and food. They do not watch television, except for major news events, and they have taken vows of poverty, chastity and obedience to dedicate their lives to prayer.
Living the school mission:
In keeping with the school’s mission statement, “Work with God to help form Christian people, upright citizens and academic scholars,” and its IB philosophy of experiential learning, service is an integral part of the Notre Dame experience for all of its students.
