Two seniors from Notre Dame Prep have been named National Merit Scholarship semifinalists.
Congratulations go to Kathleen Finn and Ben Sutkiewicz, who now have an opportunity to continue in the competition for 8,000 National Merit Scholarships worth about $35 million that will be offered next spring.
Last week, the National Merit Scholarship Corp. announced the names of the 16,000 semifinalists from across the United States. They were the highest scorers on preliminary SATs last fall. Each semifinalist will now submit an essay, a letter of recommendation from a school official, a list of extracurricular activities, a detailed academic record and an SAT score from this year.
About 90 percent of the semifinalists are expected to attain finalist standing, and more than half of the finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship, earning the "Merit Scholar" title.
