In the most recent edition of "IB-PYP News," a newsletter published by Notre Dame's lower division and its International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme Coordinator Emily Giacona, lower-school art teacher Lynn Quetell is profiled as one of many members of Notre Dame's faculty who are "going the extra mile."
Going the Extra Mile: Lynn Quetell
By Emily Giacona, IB-PYP Coordinator and Associate Dean of Admissions
One thing about the faculty and staff at Notre Dame is that they do not shy away from going the extra mile. “Going the Extra Mile” is a new feature article in the IB PYP News that will showcase the sometimes extraordinary efforts made by lower division personnel. For this edition of the Phase 2 newsletter, special recognition is given to Lynn Quetell, the lower division's art teacher.
This is Quetell’s third year at Notre Dame. She has a certification in IB Studies from Oakland University, which makes her a valuable instructor of the IB. Quetell spends a lot of time making connections with all grade-level units of inquiry, including planning special art activities for the students to create unique projects. Quetell says it's important for her to make cultural connections to each grade, and she has worked hard to create cultural projects at each grade level. For example, the third-grade students explore Egyptian art and the fifth graders explore medieval art.
Students look forward to creating their own masterpieces and seeing the work of other members of the school within the art room and in the hallway. Recently, fifth-grade students created self portraits emphasizing the importance of individuals and the diverse make-up of their class.
Bob Patterson, a third-grade teacher at Notre Dame, says Quetell is always accessible for help or advice or if one needs an extra supply, she is always willing to share. "Lynn is so patient with staff and with her students," Patterson says. "She is a fantastic art teacher with so many creative ideas. Just take a look in her classroom or in the hallways and you can see all the great things the kids learn and do in her class. The kids love going to art class with Mrs. Quetell!”
In addition to teaching art to all grade levels in the lower school, Quetell co-chairs the lower division's Michigan Green Schools initiative with Media Specialist Suzanne Braverman, assists with IB Exhibition preparation, creates Christmas crafts, moderates the Art Club and assists with other school-sponsored events.
“Lynn is a dedicated and passionate art teacher," Kim Kriesel, a second-grade teacher at the lower division, says. "She puts a lot of time into her planning. I often see her on her days off ensuring everything is just right for her students.”
