Notre Dame senior Justin Kreger is joining hundreds of the top mountain bikers from across the country who are at California’s Mammoth Mountain this weekend for the 2016 USA Cycling Mountain Bike National Championships.
Kreger, who races for the Andrie Machine Star Junior Development Team along with 2016 NDP grad Luke Mullis, competes Friday morning in the 17-18 Cat 1/2 XC Mountain Bike leg of the race. And, on Saturday morning, he will be in the 17-18 Cat 1/2 Short Track Race.
Kreger is one of just two “Junior” racers from Michigan who made the trip to Mammoth for this race. Mammoth Mountain is about 300 miles east of San Jose in the Sierra Nevada mountain range.
Usually competing as an independent (Notre Dame Prep doesn’t have a mountain bike team), most of Kreger’s races occur in the summer and fall. But during the winter and off-season, he keeps a regular and rigorous training schedule to stay in shape.
As a specialist in mountain-bike racing, Kreger is a long-time member of the Michigan Scholastic Cycling Association. In fact, he’s been racing bikes since he was 7 and he probably has more miles on his mountain bikes over the years than many people have on their cars.
Bicycle racing, especially mountain-bike racing, has experienced an almost explosive growth in the U.S., most notably for younger racers.
“I am always looking at ways to further promote this sport that I love,“ Kreger said. “And I hope to engage more Notre Dame students in this great sport.”
