Irish Swimmers And Middle Division Team Up To Help Homeless

Clothes Donation 067-4-WS
On Saturday, a group of student-athletes from the NDP men's varsity swim team donated their time at St. Aloysius's “Warehouse for the Poor,” located at St. Josaphat Church in downtown Detroit. They sorted and counted clothes donated by the parents and students of Notre Dame's middle division. Students at the middle school had been gathering and donating men's clothing for the past two weeks.

Middle division teacher Mark McGreevy, who also helped on Saturday, said that a great deal of clothing had been donated for the cause and brought into his classroom. "Shelters are in desperate need of men's clothing, especially at this cold time of year," he said. "Women tend to change wardrobes seasonally and therefore there is much more women's clothing available for the homeless."

McGreevy said to see all the clothes donated "was incredible!" He said even the regular workers at the warehouse were impressed with the amount of clothing they brought in.

"It took two SUVs and the school van to load all the clothes," he said.

But delivering the clothes wasn't the end of the work. The boys had to remove all the items from the bags and sort them by clothing type and then fold and count the items before they were bagged and tagged.

"It was a great joint effort by both the middle and upper divisions of Notre Dame," McGreevy said.
