Freshman gives back to the community during winter break

Notre Dame freshman worked with second graders at her former elementary school to make blankets for the needy.

When many of her classmates and their families were vacationing somewhere warm or perhaps just relaxing at home during Notre Dame’s winter break last week, one student wanted to do something entirely different: She wanted to give back to her community and help those less fortunate.

Mallorie Kreger, a ninth-grader in Notre Dame’s upper division, took the initiative to organize the second-grade class at Walton Charter Academy to make blankets for disadvantaged families in the local community.

Kreger attended Walton herself, so she was well familiar with the students and faculty before she decided to spend some time last week at the school, which is located just down the road from Notre Dame on Walton Blvd.

“We made fleece blankets with the second graders to donate to Oakland County Children’s Village,” Kreger said. “And when we went to deliver them to Children’s Village in Pontiac, our timing was perfect.”

When they got to Children’s Village with the blankets, one of the social workers on staff there was just heading out to welcome some young guests and "she took the blankets right then and there. It was an exciting few minutes talking with the social worker about her job and how these children need to be supported,” Kreger said.

Kreger was a student at Walton from kindergarten through eighth grade and she said the school’s focus on respect, integrity, and compassion was an important part of her education there. She also believes Notre Dame is very similar in that regard.
