Two seniors get scholar-athlete nominations from the state

Notre Dame seniors Celia Gaynor and Lauren Neiheisel were named finalists for MHSAA’s Scholar-Athlete Award.

Notre Dame seniors Celia Gaynor and Lauren Neiheisel have been named finalists for the Michigan High School Athletic Association’s Scholar-Athlete Award in Class B. Gaynor is a two-sport athlete at Notre Dame Prep (basketball and soccer) and Neiheisel most recently was a member of Notre Dame's track and cross country teams.

"I join the entire Notre Dame family in sharing how very proud I am of Celia and Lauren,” said Betty Wroubel, Notre Dame’s athletic director and assistant principal. “Not only for their academic and athletic accomplishments but also for their spirituality and the type of persons they have become. Both are the embodiment of our school’s mission to be good Christian persons, upright citizens and academic scholars.”

The program has recognized student-athletes since the 1989-90 school year and again this winter will honor 32 individuals from MHSAA member schools who participate in at least one sport in which the Association sponsors a postseason tournament. Final recipients of the scholarship will be announced in early February.

Farm Bureau Insurance underwrites the Scholar-Athlete Awards and will present a $1,000 scholarship to each of the 32 recipients. Since the beginning of the program, 736 scholarships have been awarded.

Scholarships will be presented proportionately by school classification, with 12 scholarships to be awarded to Class A student-athletes, six female and six male; eight scholarships will be awarded to Class B student-athletes, four female and four male; six scholarships will be awarded to Class C student-athletes, three female and three male; and four scholarships will be awarded to Class D student-athletes, two female and two male. In addition, two scholarships will be awarded at-large to minority recipients, regardless of school size.
