The Notre Dame Boys Varsity Swimming team made their way to Brandon High School on Tuesday evening to meet the Blackhawks. The “Mighty 6,” as they are becoming known as after beating Holly, who had 18 swimmers, went on to claim their second victory in three meets, clipping Brandon 75-39.
Season best times were recorded by Sophomore Miguel Martinez, dropping 1.1 seconds in the 50 freestyle, and Junior Giuseppe Fregoli, dropping 1.87 seconds in his 100 freestyle. Sophomore Sam Burek dropped .82 seconds in taking first place in the 100 breaststroke, just missing the state cut. Burek also finished first in the 200 Individual Medley. Other first place finishes were had by Sophomore Lars Boehme and Freshman Anthony Dupois. Boehme won both the 100 fly and 100 backstroke while Dupois took first in the 500 free and second in the 50.
Boehme and Dupois joined forces with Burek and Cole Bennett to capture first place in the 200 Medley Relay. Giuseppe Fregoli got another season best as the lead-off swimmer in the 200 free relay with teammates Martinez, Anthony and Bennett to take 1st in the event. The boys closed the meet with another first place in the final event of the night, the 400 Freestyle Relay.
“This team faces many challenges with so few members. It is hard to stay focused when the outcome is not usually favorable to your team” said Coach McGreevy. “This is our task, stay focused and look towards states. That is what the boys are doing. This is what will rebuild this program – truly determined and dedicated swimmers. That is where we are and I am truly proud of these young men.”
