Led by MHSAA Division III individual champion Danielle Staskowski, the Notre Dame Girls Varsity Golf team placed 2nd out of 18 teams at the MHSAA DIII Final held at the Bedford Valley golf course in Battle Creek. The Irish finished with a two-day team score of 697 strokes (362 and335), placing only behind Spring Lake (662) who claimed their third straight team title. “Frankly, I was proud beyond words,” said head coach Kyle Lilek. “They played OK the first day and they completely rallied the second day and performed better than I could have even hoped for. They absolutely astounded me”.
Staskowski, who shot 153 between both rounds (80 and 73) found herself tied with reigning DIII champion Anna Kramer from Spring Lake after 36 holes for the individual lead. In a one-hole sudden-death playoff a par by Staskowski earned her the state title after Kramer three-putted the hole.
Bella Hanna (93-83-176), Gigi Gonzales (93-91-184), and Maddie McClune (96-88-184) also helped Notre Dame finish comfortably in second place, topping third place Flint Powers by 21 strokes. The Irish will lose Hanna, Gonzales, McClune, Ila Batah, Daniella Cabral, Gabby Jacoby, Jacqueline Kenny, and Katherine Nachazel to graduation.
