Notre Dame Takes Flushing Tournament

The Notre Dame Varsity Volleyball team traveled to the Flushing Tournament over the weekend and brought home their second championship trophy of the season.

The Irish started the day playing St Johns and came away with a 25-18, 25-17 victory behind 12 kills from Aly Borellis and five from Bianca Giglio.  Clio was up next and the Irish used a balanced attack to hand the Mustangs a 25-9, 25-18 loss. Borellis once again led the offense with eight kills and a pair of blocks, Giglio added five kills and Theresa Carrier had six. The final match up in pool play for the Irish came against Flint Powers Catholic. Once again the Irish found scoring from multiple players to secure the win. Carrier led the way with eight kills while Borellis had six, Giglio had five and Abby Nellis had five to help the Irish come out of pool play as the top overall seed.

In the quarterfinal Notre Dame topped Powers once again this time by a score of 25-11, 25-8. Sophia Sudzina led all attackers with nine kills, Olivia Kowalkowski had four aces to go along with stellar defensive play and Elyssa Wallace added three aces.

In the semifinal the Irish earned a victory over Centerville, ranked sixth in division three, 25-17, 25-15. Borellis led the attack with eight kills and a pair of aces, Carrier and Giglio each had seven kills, and Margo Sudzina had three aces.

In the final, Notre Dame took on host Flushing. Behind a strong defensive effort, the Irish came away with a 25-16, 25-23 win to take the tournament. In the first set Flushing took the opening point only to see Giglio tie it up with a kill followed by a service ace from Wallace and the Irish never looked back. In the second set the Raiders came out strong and it looked like they would force a third and decisive game to determine the champion as they never trailed until late in the set.  A kill by Carrier gave the Irish their first lead at 23-22.  The Raider called a timeout and promptly scored on their first attack but Notre Dame responded to take the final two points and the win.
