Notre Dame Prep repeat as CHSL tourney champs

For the second straight year, Birmingham Brother Rice and Pontiac Notre Dame Prep topped the field at each of their respective Catholic League tournaments.

Rice reached the championship round in seven of eight flights and had four flight winners en route to the Division 1 title. The Warriors finished with 37 points, edging out runner-up Detroit U-D Jesuit (34). 

Three of Rice's four titles came in doubles, led by Travis Tucker and Sam Schwartz at No. 2. The pair defeated Jesuit's Carter Scott and Gabe Bulluck in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4. Evan Oesterle and Jack Brockhaus followed suit at No. 3 doubles, knocking off Jesuit's John Jeonnotte and Jason Beale in three sets. C.J. Nelson and T.J. Schwartz capped off Rice's doubles run with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Jesuit's Evan Sale and Johnny Hurley at 4-doubles.

Josh Anschuetz scored a victory in singles, winning the No. 4 flight by defeating Jesuit's Daniel Toal, 6-2, 6-3, in the final.

The Cubs won a pair of flight championships, as Fred Heegan topped Rice's Andrew Abela at 2-singles, and the No. 1 doubles team of Louis Wyre and Joey Wilson topped the Warriors' Sean Abelarde and Jarreau Campbell in the final, 6-2, 6-3.

Novi Detroit Catholic Central, which finished third overall with 21 points, had two flight champions. Caleb Roberts beat Jesuit's James Rivard in the No. 1 singles final. Jake Hermann beat Rice's Riley McNulty in three sets at No. 3.

Dearborn Divine Child finished fourth with eight points, while Warren De La Salle rounded out the field with three points.

Notre Dame Prep won five flight titles on its way to a second straight CHSL Division 2 title. The Irish won at No. 4 singles (Clark Meek) and swept the doubles competition.

Ryan Connors and Shawn Potwardowski beat Riverview Gabriel Richard's Shawn Szpaichler and Justin Wang in straight sets at No. 1 doubles. Adam Ihm and Brian Lee won in three sets at No. 2. Nick Raggio and Matt Wall needed just two, quick sets to win the No. 3 doubles title. And Alex Cousins and Luke Zerona beat their opponents in straight sets, 6-0, 6-1.

Prep finished with 25 team points, besting runner-up Riverview Gabriel Richard (18) by seven points. Ann Arbor Gabriel Richard was third with 11 points, followed by Allen Park Cabrini (3).
